Introduction

Narrator:

Sporty Bunny and EatSmart Doggie are very good friends. They are building up a StartSmart farmland.

Narrator:

Sporty Bunny is very active and loves doing exercises. EatSmart Doggie loves eating smart and believes in balanced diets to achieve good health.

Sporty Bunny:

To stay healthy, one must do regular exercises like me.

EatSmart Doggie:

A balanced diet is much more important to our health because we eat several meals every day.

Sporty Bunny:

Of course not! Doing exercise is more important! I am so healthy because I exercise frequently!

EatSmart Doggie:

A balanced diet is more important to health!

Sporty Bunny:

Physical activity is more important!

EatSmart Doggie:

A balanced diet is more important to health!

Sporty Bunny:

Physical activity is more important! Exercise more, less likely to be ill!

EatSmart Doggie:

Balanced diet help children grow faster!

Sporty Bunny:

Exercise is better for health!

EatSmart Doggie:

You don’t listen to others!

Sporty Bunny:

You don’t listen at all!

Dr Regina Ching
(Assistant Director, Department of Health) :

Hey…hey…please stop arguing. Both are equally important!

Sporty Bunny:

Um……you are?

Dr Regina Ching:

I am Dr Ching from the Department of Health.

EatSmart Doggie:

Dr Ching, why did you say that both are equally important?

Dr Regina Ching:

To start with, I have a question for you. Do you know how obesity affects children?

Sporty Bunny:

I know! It affects their health!

Dr Regina Ching:

That is correct. Obese people are more vulnerable to chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.

EatSmart Doggie:

Wow! That is dreadful!

Dr Regina Ching:

Indeed. To prevent obesity and related chronic diseases, a balanced diet and being active are equally important.

EatSmart Doggie:

But it is so tired when exercising. Do kids love doing exercise as much as Sporty Bunny?

Dr Regina Ching:

Don’t worry. Kids are, by nature, very active. Letting them exercises more not only can help prevent chronic diseases, but also can promote bone growth, boost our immunity as well as enhance academic performance!
As for psycho-social development, exercise can help kids to build up self-confidence and self-esteem, learn the essence of sportsmanship and to control of their emotions! These are best for children!

Sporty Bunny:

See! EatSmart Doggie! Do more exercise so that you won’t lose temper easily!

Dr Regina Ching:

But doing exercise alone is not enough. One must also watch out for a balanced diet and eat a wide variety of food. The best way to do is to follow the “Food Pyramid” guide!

EatSmart Doggie:

Did you hear, Sporty Bunny? You must eat smart and have a balanced diet!

Dr Regina Ching:

True. That is why the Department of Health has initiated the “StartSmart@school.hk Pilot Project” in the school year of 2010/11. It aimed at encouraging children to do more exercise and build up healthy eating habits. So, stop arguing. You both are right.

Sporty Bunny:

Dr Ching, can you tell us more about the pilot project?

Dr Regina Ching:

By giving support and training to participating pre-primary institutions, the Department of Health would like to encourage children to develop healthy eating and regular physical activity habit. This project is much welcome by schools and has been running smoothly since its launch, both children and parents enjoy it very much too.

Sporty Bunny &
EatSmart Doggie:

We want to join as well!

Dr Regina Ching:

Then let’s join together!
